AUSTRAC Enrolment Guide: How to Register Your Business
If your business provides designated services under Australia's AML/CTF Act, you must enrol with AUSTRAC as a reporting entity. For Tranche 2 businesses — real estate agents, accountants, lawyers, and conveyancers — enrolment opened on 31 March 2026 and must be completed by 29 July 2026. This guide walks you through the process step by step.
When Do You Need to Enrol?
Enrolment is required before you provide a designated service on or after 1 July 2026. The enrolment window is:
| Milestone | Date | |-----------|------| | Enrolment opens | 31 March 2026 | | AML/CTF obligations commence | 1 July 2026 | | Enrolment deadline | 29 July 2026 |
AUSTRAC recommends enrolling as early as possible. Waiting until the deadline creates risk — if your application has issues or requires additional information, you may not be enrolled in time for the obligation commencement date.
If you are an existing reporting entity (Tranche 1), you may need to update your enrolment details to reflect the new AML/CTF Rules that took effect on 31 March 2026.
What You Need Before You Start
Gather the following information before logging into AUSTRAC Online:
Business Details
- Australian Business Number (ABN) — Your registered ABN. This is mandatory.
- Business name and legal entity name — As registered with ASIC or the ABR
- Business address — Your principal place of business
- Contact details — Phone number and email address for the business
Designated Services
- Which designated services you provide — You must select from AUSTRAC's list. For Tranche 2, this includes services such as property transactions (real estate), company formation (accountants/lawyers), trust establishment, managing client funds, and conveyancing.
- When you started (or will start) providing designated services — If you are already operating, the date will be 1 July 2026 for Tranche 2 compliance purposes.
Compliance Officer Details
- Full name of your nominated AML/CTF Compliance Officer
- Position/title within the business
- Contact details — Phone and email
- The compliance officer must be "fit and proper" — possessing the competence, skills, knowledge, and integrity to oversee your AML/CTF program
Additional Information
- Number of employees involved in providing designated services
- Geographic locations where you operate
- Professional memberships or licences — For example, real estate licence number, law practising certificate, CPA/CA membership
Step-by-Step AUSTRAC Online Walkthrough
Step 1: Access AUSTRAC Online
Go to AUSTRAC Online. If you do not already have an account, you will need to create one. You can log in using myGovID (the Australian Government's digital identity system). Make sure your myGovID is linked to your business's ABN through Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).
Step 2: Start a New Enrolment
Once logged in, select "Enrol a new reporting entity" from the dashboard. Choose the entity type that matches your business structure (sole trader, partnership, company, or trust).
Step 3: Enter Business Details
Complete the business details section with your ABN, legal name, trading name(s), and principal business address. Double-check that all details match your ABR registration exactly — discrepancies can cause delays.
Step 4: Select Your Designated Services
From the list provided, select all designated services your business provides or intends to provide. Be thorough — if you provide multiple designated services across different categories, select them all. AUSTRAC uses this information to determine your reporting obligations and to send relevant sector-specific communications.
Step 5: Nominate Your Compliance Officer
Enter the details of your AML/CTF Compliance Officer. This person will be AUSTRAC's primary compliance contact for your business. They must have sufficient authority and seniority to manage your AML/CTF program. You must formally notify AUSTRAC of your compliance officer by 29 July 2026.
Step 6: Provide Operational Details
Answer questions about your business operations, including the number of staff, locations, whether you operate online, and the volume and types of transactions you typically handle. This information helps AUSTRAC assess your risk profile and tailor its supervisory approach.
Step 7: Review and Submit
Review all information for accuracy before submitting. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation reference number. Keep this for your records.
What Happens After Enrolment?
Once enrolled, you will:
- Receive confirmation of your enrolment from AUSTRAC
- Gain access to AUSTRAC Online reporting functions (for lodging SMRs, TTRs, and other reports)
- Be added to AUSTRAC's communication list for your sector, receiving regulatory updates, guidance, and compliance reminders
- Be subject to AUSTRAC's supervisory program, which may include compliance assessments, information requests, or audits
Your enrolment does not mean you are compliant. Enrolment is just the first step. You must also have your AML/CTF program in place, conduct risk assessments, implement CDD procedures, and train your staff.
Common Enrolment Mistakes
- Not linking myGovID to your ABN via RAM — This is the most common blocker. Set up RAM access well before you attempt to enrol.
- Incorrect ABN or entity details — Ensure your details match your ABR registration exactly.
- Selecting the wrong designated services — Carefully review which services you actually provide. Under-reporting can lead to compliance gaps; over-reporting creates unnecessary obligations.
- Waiting until the last week — Technical issues, system queues, and missing information can all cause delays. Enrol early.
- Forgetting to notify the compliance officer — Enrolment and compliance officer notification are separate steps. Both must be completed by 29 July 2026.
Key Deadlines Summary
